This week’s dose of inspiration comes from Belgian-based filmmaker, Joachim. His journey to being behind the camera started, ironically, behind a camera. But Joachim quickly gave up the still life for more dynamic projects, and since the shift, things have come into focus for the creator.
He’s an inspiration to true creators everywhere, so let’s check out his insights and read his answers to our 5 Creator Questions:
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Joachim and I am a filmmaker.
How did you get started?
My journey towards becoming a filmmaker took off unexpectedly; it mostly started as a result of my interest in photography. Got my first camera back in my undergraduate days solely for the purpose of creating photos for my thesis, here I am today collaborating with artists of all genres, creating music videos and recently started my first documentary project.
What sets you apart?
What sets me apart is my style of film making and my online presence. Many filmmakers these days think YouTube and social media is enough to make a professional statement but since I launched my website – which includes every detailed aspect of my production services – the increase has been amazing.
What obstacles did you have to overcome?
Financial obstacles that face every new business made things difficult of course. Being a native English speaker living in Belgium, language was also a barrier, but slowly and steadily these obstacles are clearly fading away. Lack of formal filmmaking education also made my learning curve steep, but with continuous self-learning and constant reading of every filmmaking article and book coupled with field experience, the process gets easier as the days passes.
Do you have any tips for other creators?
My tips for other creators are to think outside the box, not to worry about what the next man is making financially or otherwise, and to maintain a constant thirst for knowledge. Self-belief and hard work will prove it: the milky way is just the beginning!
