This week’s dose of inspiration comes from London-based, Japanese interior designer, Mai Motohashi.
Mai’s creative journey began as a child and hasn’t stopped yet! After studying graphic design in high school, she continued on to study interior design in college and then broke into the workforce as an interior designer in Japan for several years.
Her creative force wouldn’t let her rest, however, and last year she moved to London to pursue new experiences. Check out her answers to our 5 Creator Questions below, and then check out her site!
Who are you and what do you do?
I am an interior designer. I moved to London from Tokyo Japan in the middle of March 2018 as I wanted to have new experiences and to broaden my horizons.
I love to create things, even more than just interior things. That is why I also do illustrations.

How did you get started?
When I was younger, I started creating for someone like every child does. I never stopped, unlike many people who stop when they are getting older. Then I decided to be a graphic designer and create things for people. I am now doing interior design, though the reason why I wanted to be a designer has never changed. Finding a dream job was luckily super easy for me!

What sets you apart?
I simply keep doing what I want to do. I’m a curious person and I love looking at new things which might be useful for design work.
What obstacles did you have to overcome?
Design is never finished, but we designers are required to make decisions with confidence, so I had to learn how to be efficient and know when something was complete. Experience was really the only way to learn that.
Do you have any tips for other creators?
Knowing that you do not know makes you a better creator. I suppose creating something completely brand new is impossible. You should collect clues in your mind that will help you build ideas when you need them.
While we understand Mai’s point about not knowing, one thing we do know is that we loved her school project, Architecture in Your Hands. Make sure you check it out along with the rest of her site!
