The creator of this week is Maria-Providencia Casanovas, an artist from New York. She was an aspiring artist from an early age but only returned to her dream of making art at 35, when she decided to take her career as an artist seriously.
Let’s explore Maria’s art through her answers to our five creator questions of the week.
Who are you, and what do you do?
My name is Maria Providencia Casanovas. I am a visual artist originally from Barcelona, but I am living and working in New York City. In my work, I am interested in the spaces we inhabit daily to look into how we perceive ourselves as individuals concerning the other (the group or community). I am also fascinated by the qualities of the creative process. I work mostly in photography, printmaking, and drawing. Although the methods and materials may vary from one project to the next, they are linked together by subject matter.

How did you get started?
I have wanted to be an artist since I was little. After high school, I pursued my dream of attending an art school. However, it was not until I turned 35 that I decided to take my career as an artist seriously. At that time, I was working in a company as a textile designer, but at some point, I realized that working in a creative field did not replace my desire to be an artist.
What sets you apart?
I am a curious person, and art, for me, is a way to better understand and learn about the reality that surrounds us. My projects arise from my interactions in my everyday existence, and I try to approach myself as honestly as possible. Curiosity and honesty, together with perseverance, have sometimes allowed me to reach discoveries that I would not have noticed otherwise.

What obstacles did you have to overcome?
Making a living in New York City as an artist has made me work in many side jobs to support my practice. I find myself divided between the job that allows me to pay the bills and the one that satisfies me as an artist, and finding the right balance between making art and money is my challenge.
Do you have any tips for other creators?
Just follow your gut and feel comfortable with the internal dialogue of self-doubt, which may arise as part of the creative process. But don’t give it an opportunity to discourage you in your practice.
