This week’s dose of inspiration comes from London-based men’s fashion entrepreneur, Seth Footring and his project, 502 Bad Gateway. Seth manages to blog about style, with style, and the sleek layouts of his articles keep readers scrolling for more. But it’s not just blogging – there’s also a podcast, traveller’s photo journal and more!
We particularly liked his article about Fronteer; from the eye-catching GIF thumbnail on the main page, to the colorful product images, to the quality of the content itself, we found ourselves being drawn in and then getting lost reading through his enthusiastic and entertaining articles.
Now that we’ve told you why we think 502 Bad Gateway is worth checking out, let’s let Seth speak for himself and answer our 5 Creator Questions:
Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Seth Footring, and 502 Bad Gateway is how I fulfill the creative side of my personality, primarily through writing. I have a day job that is quite monotonous so this gives me a nice break from that. I work in men’s fashion in both my day job and my website, but the content of the site reflects my personal taste more. It was great to have the freedom to build something that showed that and wasn’t just slapping random premade things wherever to make something.
How did you get started?
I worked for someone else doing something similar for free and then one day I thought fuck that, I can do that for myself. It’s not yet on the same level but has the possibility to be.
What sets you apart?
My taste I guess. To put in 2019 marketing jargon I would say that I curate the site and the curation is what separates my project from the rest. I try to only focus on content that has substance and that’s been an interesting challenge. The layout of the site is definitely something that I’ve been complimented on and I’ve tried to create something that is text-first but also visually rich.
What obstacles did you have to overcome?
Difficulties are finding the time, so I try to be as efficient as possible to overcome this. If I even had one day per week to do this and nothing else I would probably be much further along but I try to do as many early mornings and late nights as I can.
Do you have any tips for other creators?
Don’t worry about getting it perfect first time, just make it as good as you possibly can and work out what can be developed after you’ve put the first things in motion. My other tip would be to do the first things first, you can’t progress without doing so even though it sounds obvious.
